Orwell Bridge Maintenance Work: Key Dates and Travel Advice for Suffolk Businesses

The Orwell Bridge, a critical part of the A14 route in Suffolk, will undergo essential maintenance starting Monday 16 June 2025, with works continuing until August 2025. This major infrastructure project will involve significant lane closures and traffic management measures that may affect travel times across the region.

What to Expect:

  • From 16 June: Overnight lane closures between 8pm and 6am.
  • 20 to 26 June: Overnight full carriageway closures from 8pm to 6am, including weekends.
  • From 23 June: The eastbound carriageway towards Felixstowe will be reduced to one lane; westbound traffic will continue without restrictions.
  • From 26 June until August 2025: Contraflow system in place with one lane open in each direction on both carriageways.
  • Slip Road Closure: From 26 June, the westbound entry slip road at Junction 57 (Nacton Interchange) will be closed for the duration of the project. Drivers wishing to head westbound will need to use Junction 58 (Seven Hills Interchange) as a diversion.

Impact on Businesses and Commuters:

Although the bridge will remain open for most of the work, drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time. Overnight closures will mean diversions between Junction 58 and Junction 55, using the A12 and A1214. Road users are encouraged to avoid diverting through Ipswich itself to reduce congestion on smaller roads.

Work will be carried out 24/7, including weekends, with the aim of completing the project as quickly as possible while minimising disruption.

Planning Ahead:

We recommend Suffolk Chamber members review delivery schedules, employee commute plans, and client meeting times in light of the expected delays. Advance planning will help reduce the impact on business operations and staff travel.

The Chamber will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if there are changes to the work schedule or traffic management plans.
