Nuclear Renaissance: Suffolk Chamber Welcomes UK-US Energy Security Deal

Suffolk Chamber of Commerce welcomes the announcement this week that the UK has entered a new ‘Golden Age’ of nuclear energy following the signing of the UK–US energy security deal. This landmark collaboration between British and American companies will focus on delivering new nuclear power stations across the country.

The deal follows the Government’s mission to become a clean energy superpower, ensuring the United Kingdom maximises its ability to produce a clean, secure, homegrown power supply.

According to the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), the UK’s nuclear sector has already created 11,000 new jobs this year, with strong momentum driven by the major expansion of new nuclear projects. Suffolk Chamber is already witnessing the benefits of nuclear investment as a result of the multi-billion-pound Sizewell C project being given the green light.

The construction of Sizewell C is expected to support around 70,000 jobs, with many thousands of those jobs being created here in the East. The project will not only generate economic growth but also enhance infrastructure and logistics, help bridge industry skills gaps, and create a lasting legacy for the East of England and the wider UK. Notably, 70% of the project’s construction spend will be spent with UK companies

Aligned with the Government’s levelling up agenda, Sizewell C is set to invest £4.4 billion in the East of England, including £2.0 billion in Suffolk alone.

Commenting on this week’s monumental announcement, Ashley Shorey-Mills, Supply Chain Engagement Director at the Suffolk Chamber said "Suffolk Chamber is delighted to celebrate this announcement. By continuing our work with Sizewell C through our supply chain networks, we are playing an active role in supporting the UK’s accelerated nuclear energy strategy and generating a legacy fitting from such projects. We look forward to sharing our nuclear supply chain and advocacy work with the other regions of the UK to support growth, jobs and investment and to maximise the benefit these projects bring to the local businesses we represent."

If your business is keen to play a role in Sizewell C’s Supply Chain, make the most of your opportunity to get involved by registering with the Suffolk Chamber Supply Chain Engagement Portal, where the team will support you throughout your journey alongside the project.
