UK Businesses Urged to Prepare for Smoother Trade with the EU

UK exporters and importers, particularly in the agri‑food sector are being encouraged to take practical steps now to benefit from a forthcoming UK‑EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement, aimed at making trade with the EU easier, faster and more cost‑effective.

The agreement is expected to significantly reduce paperwork, delays and compliance costs that have hampered UK‑EU trade since 2018, when food and agricultural exports to the EU fell by 22%. By streamlining border checks and certification requirements, the deal aims to improve supply chain resilience, boost export opportunities, particularly for SMEs and help UK products regain access to EU markets.

Businesses are advised to engage early by reviewing current EU trading requirements, assessing supply chains, and contributing to the government’s Call for Information, launched to shape guidance and support ahead of the agreement’s expected implementation in mid‑2027. The government says early preparation will be key to maximising the commercial benefits once the new arrangements come into force.
