Suffolk Chamber of Commerce welcomes BCC President Andy Haldane to 142nd AGM

Suffolk Chamber of Commerce welcomed members and partners to its 142nd Annual General Meeting at Easton Grange, Woodbridge, bringing together the county’s business community at a significant moment for the UK economy.

The event featured Andy Haldane CBE, President of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), who joined Suffolk businesses for both a roundtable discussion and a wider Q&A session during the afternoon. His visit came at a significant moment for the UK economy and ahead of a major global Chambers conference.

Andy Haldane, who took up his role as BCC President in February 2026, represents businesses across the UK Chamber network at a critical period for economic growth and policy direction.

The day began with a focused roundtable, providing local business leaders with the opportunity to share first-hand insights on the challenges facing their organisations. This was followed by wider networking, enabling connections across Suffolk’s business community.

The formal AGM was opened by Suffolk Chamber President Catherine Johnson, who reflected on Suffolk Chamber’s activity over the past year and its ongoing role in representing businesses across the county.

Andy Haldane then addressed the full audience, providing an update on the national economic landscape before leading a Q&A session. This created a direct platform for Suffolk businesses to raise key issues and ensure their voices are heard within national discussions.

Chief Executive John Dugmore led the formal AGM proceedings, including governance and voting matters. This also included Board updates, where the Chamber recognised the contribution of Doug Field, as he stepped down from his role as Board Director, thanking him for his valued service and commitment.

The AGM also marked the appointment of Bryony Hope, Head of Communications and Development at DanceEast, as a new Board Director, reflecting both continuity and renewal within Suffolk Chamber’s leadership.

John Dugmore, Chief Executive of Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, said:

"We were delighted to welcome Andy Haldane to Suffolk at such a significant moment. Bringing together local businesses with national leadership is exactly how we ensure that the voice of Suffolk is heard, understood and acted upon.

As we reflect on the past 12 months, we are proud of the work delivered on behalf of our members, strengthening connections, influencing policy and helping businesses navigate an evolving economic landscape.

I would also like to thank Doug Field for his valued contribution to the Chamber Board and the support he has given during his time as a Director. At the same time, we are delighted to welcome Bryony Hope to the Board. Bryony brings a wealth of experience and a strong understanding of Suffolk's cultural and creative sector, which will be an important addition to our leadership team.

While challenges remain, it is more important than ever that businesses have a strong collective voice. That is where Suffolk Chamber continues to play a vital role, representing our members' interests and helping create the conditions for growth across the county."

Bryony Hope, Head of Communications and Development at DanceEast, said:

" It’s an absolute privilege to join the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce Board as a representative of Suffolk’s cultural sector. I have great admiration for the work of the Chamber in representing Suffolk business interests and acting as a convener and networker. I look forward to contributing to Chamber’s work as a Board Director and connecting it closely with Suffolk’s cultural and creative businesses.

It was fitting that the AGM address was given by economist Andy Haldane CBE, President of the British Chambers of Commerce. Andy talked about the Greater Manchester model of rapid growth, citing culture as one of four key pillars in its success.”

The AGM concluded with networking and discussion among members, partners and stakeholders, reinforcing Suffolk Chamber’s commitment to representing businesses, influencing policy and creating opportunities for growth across Suffolk.
