Suffolk Chamber in Newmarket & District gains from experience of new board members

The leading voice of the business community in Mildenhall, Newmarket and the villages surrounding them has been further strengthened this week with the confirmation that two highly experienced local businesspeople have joined its board.

Sophie Able, Regional Head of Sales – East, The Jockey Club and Steve Elsom, area director, Lloyds Bank SME Banking - East Anglia were formally approved as board members at a meeting of the board of Suffolk Chamber of Commerce in Newmarket & District.

Suffolk Chamber’s representation in Newmarket & District makes it the largest business membership organisation in this part of Suffolk, whilst the Chamber as a whole is the biggest business membership body across the whole of the county.

Sophie said “I am delighted and honoured to be joining the Suffolk Chamber in Newmarket & District Board.  Through my job as Head of Sales at the Racecourse, I absolutely support and understand the importance of working closely with other businesses in the town, making this a fantastic opportunity to be part of a committee that strives to develop and strengthen the surrounding business landscape.  I look forward to getting started and hopefully adding to an already successful Board.”

Steve explained that “the Chamber plays an important role in supporting businesses, both in its lobbying capacity and also by providing insight and guidance around the multi-faceted aspects of running a business, including the provision of relevant networking events. I have seen at first-hand how the ‘relationship’ between Chamber and business can enable the local economy and its communities to flourish and I look forward to playing my part in helping us create more of these such legacies in the future.”

Michael Robinson, a vice-chair of Suffolk Chamber in Newmarket & District, welcomed the two appointments. “Sophie and Steve will greatly enhance and strengthen our Board. Both have impeccable records in business and both are known for their professionalism, hard work, business links and commercial awareness. We are delighted to have them with us and we’ll benefit from their experience.

“Suffolk Chamber in Newmarket & District is the leading voice for the business community in working with Forest Heath District Council in the towns of Newmarket, Mildenhall and Brandon. The future of the massive RAF Mildenhall site is of major concern to Suffolk Chamber in Newmarket & District and we are co-hosting a business consultation breakfast with Forest Heath District Council on the future of the base once United States Visiting Forces leave.”
