This week the news we have been waiting for has finally come through from the RFU, that after two excellent campaigns last season both our 1st XV and 2nd XV have been promoted for the coming season.

After only losing one game last year and only finishing 2nd in the league by virtue of bonus points, the 1sts step up into Level 6 rugby in the newly named "Regional 2 Anglia" league, where we will come up against some familiar local faces, as well as some teams that we have not played in a number of years. Local rivalries will continue with Stowmarket and Chelmsford, who also join from London 2NE last season, and Norwich RFC who were promoted in 20/21. We will also be making regular trips down the A12 to visit the likes of Brentwood, Chingford, Southend, Eton Manor, Thurrock and Woodford, as well as a new trip to the heart of the City of London to play HAC.

The Magpies are also rewarded for their strong outing last year with promotion into Level 8 Counties 2 Eastern Counties league. This also promises to be a strong league, playing several local 1st XVs, as well as several 2nd XVs from other senior Eastern Counties clubs. The team look forward to a season long campaign in this 11 team league, without the uncertainty of a 2nd phase of fixtures after Christmas. This will mean we can plan for two sets of big home fixtures for both teams to entertain home crowds at Humber Doucy Lane.

Head Coach Jim Clark commented on the issue of the new League format:

“A lot of hard work has been carried out both on and off the field, and as a result it is exciting to see both the First Team and Magpies (Second Team) obtain promotion for season 2022-23, this being confirmed with the issue of the English League structure this week.

This gives players the opportunity to test themselves in a challenging and enjoyable environment, and planning is well underway for pre-season to prepare individual players and the respective teams in the best possible way.

The 3rd XV and Tankards (Fourth Team) remain integral parts of the club offering Rugby at both developmental and recreational level, and we look forward to receiving details of their respective Leagues within the Eastern Counties structure shortly”.

Preseason for the senior mens teams starts on 14th June, and additional players of all abilities are welcome to come and join our vibrant community club. The coaching team comprises multiple level 3 coaches, who enjoy working with and developing players of all abilities, supported by a great behind the scenes staff. We can help people settle into the club and the area, and provide first class medical support from Dynamic Recoveries. New players looking to connect with the club should contact Director of Rugby Marcus Tobin on or 07935438807.

The club looks forward to the challenge of our top two mens teams competing at a higher level, which is just one step in the journey in the development and growth of Ipswich Rugby. Sponsors and commercial partners looking to share in the journey can reach out to the club at to discuss the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
