Up, up and away

The sky's the limit for staff at leading East of England accountants PKF East Anglia, as they limber up their lungs for a charity balloon release in aid of World Kidney Day.For David Merrygold, partner at PKF Ipswich, it's a cause close to his heart as he received a kidney from his wife Barbara in a transplant in March 2002.He explains: 'I was very fortunate to be given the chance of better health and a better life, but for thousands of people a transplant isn't an option because of the dire lack of donors.'By organising the balloon release, which takes place outside the Renal Unit at Ipswich Hospital on 13 March, Mr Merrygold hopes to raise awareness of the condition, which blights the lives of millions of people.'In the UK more than 3 million people are under threat from chronic kidney disease and every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with kidney cancer,' he reveals. He has the support of leading accountants and business advisers PKF, which has offices in Ipswich, Great Yarmouth and Norwich, as well as staff and patients from Ipswich Hospital's Renal Unit, who turned out in force to help blow up balloons ready for the mass release.Mr Merrygold continues: 'At this time more than 6,500 people are waiting for a kidney, yet only around 1,700 kidney transplants are carried out each year.He adds: 'I would encourage everybody to carry a donor card so that more people can lead a normal and healthy life.'
