Gateway to Central Asia: Uzbek Ambassador Visits Suffolk to Unlock New Trade Opportunities

Suffolk Chamber of Commerce welcomed senior officials from the Embassy of Uzbekistan in the United Kingdom as they visited Suffolk for a high-level programme aimed at strengthening commercial and educational ties with one of Central Asia’s fastest-growing economies.

Held on Thursday, 29 January, at the University of Suffolk, the flagship trade discussion brought together Suffolk businesses and the Embassy of Uzbekistan’s trade team to explore opportunities in a rapidly modernising market of 36 million people, strategically positioned as a gateway between Europe and Asia.

Uzbekistan continues to implement wide-ranging economic reforms, including trade liberalisation, simplified customs procedures, and attractive incentives for foreign investors. With the UK recognised as a priority partner, demand is rising for British expertise in renewable energy, advanced engineering, agri-tech, education, infrastructure, IT, and food and drink.

During the visit, the Embassy of Uzbekistan’s trade officials outlined the country’s current trade priorities and sector-specific opportunities. Suffolk businesses received practical guidance on exporting, forming partnerships, and investing in the region, followed by a tailored Q&A session addressing the needs of companies seeking international diversification.

Strengthening Local Partnerships

The delegation also held a constructive meeting with Marek Hornak, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Commercial and Academic Partnerships at the University of Suffolk, to explore academic cooperation, knowledge exchange, and skills development aligned with Uzbekistan’s national education reforms.

Showcasing Suffolk Innovation

To highlight Suffolk’s manufacturing expertise, the officials visited Claydon Drills, a longstanding Suffolk Chamber member and internationally recognised leader in agricultural machinery. The site tour offered insight into UK innovation in agri-tech, a sector of strategic relevance to Uzbekistan’s modernisation agenda.

Zikrulla Hamidjonov, Head of Trade & Investment for the Embassy of Uzbekistan in the UK, said:

"It was a pleasure to visit Suffolk and engage with such a dynamic business community. Strengthening international connections is essential for supporting growth, encouraging innovation, and creating new opportunities for both Uzbek and British companies to expand their global reach. I look forward to continuing our collaboration and building on the positive momentum from this visit. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and Koyas Miah for making this visit both possible and highly productive."

Koyas Miah, International Trade Manager at Suffolk Chamber, added:

“This visit provided Suffolk businesses with direct access to decision makers and invaluable insight into a fast growing and increasingly accessible market. Uzbekistan presents a compelling opportunity for companies looking to diversify internationally, and the Chamber is committed to supporting businesses as they explore and develop these connections.”

Looking Ahead The visit highlighted the growing importance of Central Asia to UK trade and Suffolk’s readiness to engage with new global opportunities. Suffolk Chamber of Commerce looks forward to building on the momentum generated by the Ambassador’s visit, supporting local businesses as they explore growth opportunities in Uzbekistan and beyond.
