From Suffolk to Singapore: Building on Trade Opportunities in Overseas Markets

The Executive Chairman of Challs International, Graham Burchell, and Business Development Director, Edward Burchell, recently met with David Kelly, Executive Director of the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore to discuss trade opportunities between Suffolk and Southeast Asia. The team from Challs, who were in Singapore as part of the continuing market exploration of the region, had previously been recognised as BritCham Singapore’s UK Exporter of the Year in 2021 in their 22nd Annual Business Awards initiative.

The meeting, facilitated by the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, reflects the growing momentum to build stronger business links between British regions and key global markets such as Singapore. Challs International, headquartered in Hadleigh, Suffolk, is a family-owned manufacturer known for its innovative cleaning products and international export success. The discussion explored avenues to support Suffolk exporters looking to expand into Singapore and the wider ASEAN region, while also sharing insights on doing business across borders. In the four quarters to the end of Q1 2025, the UK exported £6.5 billion to Singapore in goods, with a further £9.3 billion in services.

John Dugmore, Chief Executive of the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, said:

“It’s fantastic to see Suffolk businesses like Challs connecting directly with British Chambers overseas to explore new trade routes. Singapore is a vital gateway into Asia, and collaborations like this help bring Suffolk’s entrepreneurial spirit to the world stage.”

David Kelly, Executive Director of the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore, added:

“We’re proud to work alongside our UK Chamber network to help British companies identify real opportunities in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Suffolk has a strong track record in innovation and manufacturing, and Challs is a perfect example of how UK businesses can thrive internationally. In 2021, Challs International won our Exporter of the Year award, further demonstrating the success of UK firms in this part of the world.”

Both Chambers plan to continue building connections between the Suffolk business community and Singapore’s dynamic market, fostering greater collaboration and opportunities for trade and investment through welcoming new entrants to the market and providing market advice to those considering exporting. The British Chamber of Commerce Singapore offers a suite of market entry, trade mission and advisory services through it’s Trade Services team.
