Building a Skilled Workforce for a Cleaner Energy Future
Workforce growth
The Government has published its first national plan to recruit workers for its clean energy mission, declaring there will be a direct increase of 40,000 jobs in the East of England by 2030 – the joint most of any region and raising numbers to three times the current figures. The biggest job growth will be in science, research, engineering and technology professionals; followed by skilled construction and building trades, and skilled metal, electrical and electronic trades.
New Technical Excellence Colleges
As part of government’s drive for two-thirds of young people to be in higher-level learning, there will also be 5 new clean energy Technical Excellence Colleges to train next generation of workers.
Service leavers pilot
The Government will work with the Office for Veterans' Affairs to develop and promote new employment pathways and career opportunities for veterans, and their families, into the clean energy sector. This includes a 12 month pilot led by Mission Renewable to connect veterans and service leavers with clean energy careers in the East of England.
In partnership with RenewableUK and Solar Energy UK, the pilot will map career pathways and use Op ASCEND and the Career Transition Partnership to support more armed forces leavers into high-demand roles in the region. The learning from this pilot will help identify future actions the government can take to strengthen veteran pathways into the clean energy sector across the UK.
