A clear aviation strategy is essential for economic growth, says BCC

Commenting on the scoping document on aviation policy, published today by the Department for Transport, David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:

“While we are encouraged to see the Government acknowledging the importance of aviation for economic growth in the UK, the document fails to set out a clear plan as to how we can build our aviation capacity in the months and years ahead.

“We have been campaigning long and hard for the Government to commit to a real strategy on aviation for the future. The vital role of aviation in boosting the economy should not be underestimated. Britain’s status as an international business hub is under threat while our European competitors are leading the way.

“High speed rail will help promote connectivity between the UK and the continent, but this is not enough. If businesses are to export successfully to emerging markets around the world, and the UK remain an attractive destination for both business and tourism, we need strong airline links. If we do not see a robust structure for the UK’s aviation policy in place soon, we will continue to fall down the league table and our growth and prosperity will suffer as a result.”
