Search & Rescue needs your help
The flat lands of East Anglia are not synonymous with the phrase Search & Rescue, but working closely with Suffolk police is a group of volunteers, ready and willing to turn out 24/7 in any weather. They are Suffolk Lowland Search & Rescue or SULSAR for short. We are the lowland equivalent of Mountain Rescue, formed specifically to help the Police find vulnerable missing people in Suffolk. We are a charity & have been active for 11 years.
The group is made up of approx 50 people from all walks of life and all ages from 18 years up, based all over Suffolk and adjoining counties. SULSAR are activated by the police when a vulnerable person is reported missing. This could be a child, an Alzheimer’s sufferer who may have become lost or a depressed person who may have nowhere to turn in a crisis and decides to self harm or take their own life.
The group is trained in many aspects of Search and Rescue techniques, such as navigation, first aid, search methods, communication and much more. Training is ongoing, normally one evening and one Sunday a month at various locations in Suffolk. The group works as a team with many people becoming close friends, so it’s a great way to meet new people.
Finding missing people is our objective. Hopefully they are alive, like the recent case of the 15yr old boy in Groton or the elderly patient missing from West Suffolk Hospital. Unfortunately not all are found alive like the Southwold teenager in early 2009, but in all cases it is important for the relatives to know where their loved ones are. We average approximately 20 callouts a year.
We always need new members, so if you want to spend time outdoors and train for a worthwhile purpose why not call 0845 0091720 or go to www.sulsar.org.uk and become part of a motivated team.
We are a voluntary charity & survive on donations, so if you would like to give something, please go to our web site to find details of how to donate.
