New deep water terminals open at Felixstowe

Felixstowe Port

03 Oct 2011

The Port of Felixstowe has opened its new deep water shipping terminals; the only ones in the UK which can accommodate the world’s largest container ships. The expansion, involving two new berths, will create 1,500 new jobs at Felixtowe and marks the first stage of a £1 billion plus investment programme by owner Hutchison in its UK ports. The expansion could add a further £20bn to the £60 billion of trade passing through the Port of Felixstowe, which handles around 40 per cent of the country’s container cargo.

Berths 8&9 will be equipped with seven of the largest container cranes in the world and each crane can manage ships with containers stowed 24-wide on deck. Felixstowe will be one of the ports for large container ships coming from East Asia which only make three or four stops at ports in Europe.

David Gledhill, CEO of the port’s owner HPUK, said: “As well as providing a boost to British business the investment programme planned for Felixstowe will also benefit the local area. Over 32,000 individuals are currently employed, directly or indirectly, in the Haven Gateway, of which the Port of Felixstowe is a part." The port will also build a third rail terminal in 2012, with capacity for 30-wagon long trains, doubling the rail terminal capacity at the port.
