Free Home Fire Safety Check available

Nationally a large amount of publicity was generated earlier this year following a tragic fire in a block of flats in Camberwell, London.  Sadly in the fire 6 persons died.  The fire began on the 9th floor and those who died were all on the 11th floor.   A national debate has begun in the UK Fire Industry about the cause and the reason the fire spread with such rapidity.  It would be unwise to speculate about its cause.

Whilst the enquiry is ongoing and investigation is taking place, it would be very wise for any person or Managing Agent responsible for the safe upkeep of any flats, no matter whether they are 2 storeys or 20, to ensure that they have carried out a suitable fire risk assessment as laid down by the recent 'Fire Safety Order' (usually referred to as the RRO).    This legislation requires a responsible person to carry out a fire risk assessment.   Currently Fire & Rescue Services are visiting many blocks of flats all over the country and carrying out safety audits to ensure that the law is being complied with and those residents are safe.  In London hundreds have been visited and many have been found with either no assessments or assessments not acted upon.  In West Yorkshire all landlords have been contacted and reminded of their responsibilities under this legislation.  The Fire & Rescue Services may well view this as a 'test' of the new legislation and prosecute landlords who have failed to carry out their responsibility.

Any residents who have concerns within their own flat can ask for a free home fire safety check from their local Fire & Rescue Service Community Safety Department.  In Suffolk they can be contacted on 01473 260588.
