Practical Ecology Ltd- Winter Update

Practical Ecology Ltd- Winter Update

22 Nov 2010

Winter 2010

It’s that time of year again, with temperatures falling and the snow fall looming many of our native animals are going into dormancy for the winter period and who can blame them? The same cannot be said, however, for ecologists! With advanced clearance and preparatory work for many development sites being undertaken during the winter period, many ecological surveys are commissioned outside of the peak spring/summer survey season.

Practical Ecology Ltd is a small, independent ecological consultancy based near Bury St Edmunds and operating throughout the East of England. We offer a wide range of ecological services including protected species surveys, Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, Ecological Impact Assessments, invasive species surveys and protected species mitigation. Established nearly seven months ago Practical Ecology brings together in excess of 25 years experience of environmental and ecological consultancy and client satisfaction.

The range of species specific surveys we can undertake at this time of year is of course limited and mitigation for many species is also seasonal. Surveys which gather baseline information for a site (i.e. the potential occurrence of protected species and/or habitats) can still be undertaken at this time of year and can help identify any ecological constraints to the proposed works.

In some instances seemingly unfavourable weather conditions can aid in the identification of a protected species on site; tracking badgers in the snow last winter being an experience not to be forgotten!

For those of you who don’t know us already but would like to know more, please feel free to contact us via our website for more information about the ecological work we undertake or to book some free of charge ecological awareness training.
