EU summit deal to reduce carbon emissions a major turning point

03 Mar 2007
Commenting on the EU summit deal to reduce carbon emissions by 20% by 2020 David Frost, Director-General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:
"This is a major turning point in Europe's role in meeting the challenge of climate change. Businesses agree that action needs to be taken but we need to make sure that this does not result in more regulation and UK and European businesses do not bear the costs alone in reducing carbon emissions.
Businesses, such as our members, are aware of the issue of climate change and are taking the initiative in implementing energy efficient policies. The BCC expects clear guidelines on how the 20% target can be achieved.
Businesses in the UK and Europe cannot solely bear the responsibility of climate change. If a true shift towards rising to the challenge of climate change is to be achieved then other nations such as the US, India and China must come on board.
There also needs to be more incentives for SME's to take on the green agenda and more recognition of the greater role which the general public can and must play in reducing carbon emissions."
