Lowestoft Local Links

Lowestoft Local Links is a new £6.5m project brought about to encourage healthier lifestyles and to reduce traffic congestion. The aim is to encourage people to walk, cycle, ride a train or a bus to work and to promote greener ways to travel as well as improve health.

This initiative backed by the Lowestoft & Waveney Chamber of Commerce, and funded by the Department of Transport, Waveney District Council and Suffolk County Council has already planned to construct a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over Lake Lothing. There are also hopes to add new bus routes and cycle routes to give people easier and safer access in Lowestoft as well as a number of travel-related events and workshops to involve schools and local businesses.

Lowestoft Local Links held its launch event at the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club on 30th April 2012. It was very well attended and the ideas from Nicola Fowler (travel planner for Suffolk County Council) and the team were well received.

It is hoped this scheme will inspire people to cut down on their car journeys. This won’t solve the problem of traffic congestion, but it will help to ease it.

You'll be able to catch up with the Local Links team at all our Lowestoft & Waveney Chamber events. So pop along and have a chat with them, find out more about the project and how you can get involved.

May is National Walking Month, and to promote walking in Lowestoft we are asking you to walk more of your journeys and take some snaps along the way!

Walking is easy, most of us walk everyday! It’s great for your health and has many benefits. It’s easy to do and can be done practically anywhere. Did you know that any brisk walk over ten minutes long counts? You can take along the family, the dog or a friend and use the time to have a good chat along the way. Whatever the weather come rain or shine walking is great – if it’s raining just pop on a pair of wellies and splash around in the puddles. Best of all walking is free!

Swap your car journey to work or school and walk for a change, or leave the car at home and walk to the shops. Not only is this a healthier option you will also save money!

We want you to take some photos of your walking journey this month and send them in to us either through our Facebook page – www.facebook.com/LowestoftLocalLinks or via Twitter - @LowestoftLinks or you can email us on LowestofLocalLinks@suffolk.gov.uk. You have from the 1st May – 31st May to send in your entries to us.

Two winners will be awarded a £20 Love2Shop voucher. One of our winners will be awarded for the best photo that captures walking in Lowestoft judged by local photographer Peter Eyles. Our other winner will be decided by YOU. All photos will be placed in a folder on our Facebook page so just simply like the one that is your favourite. The photo with the most likes on the 31st May will be our winner – don’t forget to share the page with your family and friends!

Money for Life Challenge - 13th and 15th Ferbuary - Lowestoft FE College

Lowestoft Local Links supported a group of business students taking part in the Money for Life Challenge at Lowestoft College, the students focused on money saving ideas in terms of travel to and from the college. The students hosted the event in the main reception area at the college and held competitions such as a 90 second cycle challenge with the chance to win I-Tune vouchers. The team focussed on how staff and students at the college could cut travel costs by suggesting car sharing, cycling and walking.

Staff and students at the college had the chance to talk to the team about the options of travel which would be best suited to them, and also discuss how much they could save by choosing a different way to travel. The team had researched extensively and were able to give out the amount of money a driver could save by car sharing, from most local locations. The team managed to successfully register a considerable amount of people to the SuffolkCarShare.com database.
