The Glory of Failure

The Glory of Failure

IPSWICH WATERFRONT

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS SUFFOLK, LECTURE THEATRE ONE

08/03/2011 5:30PM to 8:00PM

Exploring how failure can be part of being more innovative and creative.

Being able to innovate is even more important in times of political, economic and social turbulence.

But how can we innovate unless we are open to the possibility of failure?

Everyone experiences failure, we don’t like it, we see it as “A Bad Thing”. But is this the wrong conclusion?

The Glory of Failure project has come about through a group of people involved in the RSA trying to explore these and other questions on failure, to promote the benefits of failure within organisations, individuals and society, with the aim of living in a world where we can create, innovate, and thrive free from the stigma of failure.

We are now with taking the project around the UK, to coincide with the publication of ‘The Failure Files’ in Spring 2011 - a set of essays on how failure might be encountered in different ways.

The tour is coming to UCS, Ipswich on Tuesday 8 March: 5:30 pm for 6 to 8pm, Lecture Theatre One, the Waterfront Building.

During the evening, there will be an introduction to both the project and the book, facilitated discussion, and talks by two chapter authors: David Hillson, recognised internationally as a thought leader and expert practitioner in risk management, who offers a structured response to failure, exploring the links between success and failure and suggests some defining characteristics of failure; and Esmee Wilcox, who gives a perspective from government, from working in a number of central government departments, agencies and local government.

The evening promises to be a space for stimulating debate.

If you can arrive early or stay late, please take the opportunity to look at the new art exhibition next to the lecture theatre, which is being opened two days early for this event. The Theta Café will be open for refreshments throughout the evening.

Please reserve your place by replying to Esmee Wilcox as soon as possible as places are limited, and by Friday 25 February. esmeewilcox@yahoo.co.uk  If you can’t attend but would like to participate in a webinar (web-enabled audio conference) please get in touch.

More details will follow as the programme is finalised.
